HR Jobs
Bristol
Human Resources is a career path that only
the thick skinned can be successful at. You need to be able to
detach your personal feelings from your work, as some of your
responsibilities will include dismissal and redundancy. If you
cannot handle hiring and firing employees without getting
personally involved, you should look for a different career
choice. It is not all doom and gloom however, you can also help
employees to get more training, receive benefits and help them
with career opportunities, something that can improve the
working and financial lives of many. There are two major areas
of HR jobs; recruitment and HR management. Recruitment is
fairly self explanatory, although the various roles will be
discussed below. HR management is used to describe every area
of employee/employer relations, and there are different
departments within management which you can specialise in.
Recruitment
Working in recruitment for a HR firm is a
varied career choice and you will have many
responsibilities.
As a recruitment consultant you will be
responsible for attracting candidates for positions at your
client’s companies, screening the applicants, interviewing them
and conducting back ground checks. You may also be asked to
advise your clients or the applicants on career advancement and
development, salary levels and any training that they should be
given or need to undertake. You will meet with your clients and
form a relationship with them so that you can fully understand
their recruitment needs, helping you to sort through all the
applicants and find the best selection for your client to
choose from. One of your most important tasks will be to draft
copy for job advertisements and get these placed in the
relevant media sources including internet job sites, newspapers
and specialist industry publications. You are looking at an
entry level salary of £18,000 to £20,000 and senior consultants
can earn anything from £40,000 to £100,000 a year. A degree is
normally required of applicants looking to get into HR, and you
will need to be able to display excellent communication skills
among other relevant skills for the role.
A recruitment manager works for an
individual company, and will assist them on their recruitment
needs and also the redundancy of employees. They liaise with
job centres and recruitment agencies to find the right
employees for their company. The main role of a recruitment
manager is to communicate with the line managers and department
managers of their company to discuss the skills, qualifications
and attributes needed in an applicant for any vacancies they
may have. You might also be responsible for redeploying
employees to different departments within your own company. The
salary for a recruitment manager is similar to a consultant,
although the top line salary depends on what size company you
are working for. You can expect however to reach a salary in
the range of £35,000 to £60,000 with five years of
experience.
HR Management
HR management is everything to do with
employee relations from equal opportunities, compensation and
benefits. The roles within each sector vary widely.
Compensation and benefits managers devise
and implement a company’s rewards and benefits scheme,
including bonuses, pensions, company cars, medical insurance
and profit sharing. Working under the managers would be
employee benefit consultants, who work in the implementation of
these schemes.
Equal opportunities officers/managers ensure
that their company keeps in line with regulation surrounding
equality and diversity in the work place. They keep up to date
with legislation and keep records of the equality monitoring
data for their company.
Employee relations officers work at a
strategic and operational level to manage the policies that
affect employees at work. This can be anything from maternity
and paternity leave, grievance procedures and working
conditions.
All of these careers give you the chance to
earn a considerable salary, which grows with experience.
Working in HR can see you with considerable
career development opportunities, working through the ranks to
reach senior or managerial levels. You need to be able to
communicate with every employee in your company, and be
receptive to issues raised by workers and your employers.
In Bristol there are opportunities for
careers in HR you just need to perform a thorough job search in
local papers, on the internet and through individual
companies.
